On Saturday, 1 November, I attended the Hainan Free Trade Port Promotion and Hainan Island Spectacular Performance at the Sydney Opera House.

The performance showcased the Chinese island’s vibrant cultural heritage through song, dance, and music. Yet, what intrigued me most was the insight I gained into the upcoming Hainan Free Trade Port project.
Scheduled for launch on 18 December, the Hainan Free Trade Port represents an ambitious initiative designed to position Hainan Island alongside global hubs such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Dubai. The development is backed by the island’s location, a series of progressive Chinese policies and strategies including tax and tariff incentives, visa concessions, modern infrastructure, and programs in specialized sectors including agriculture, education, tourism, healthcare, and emerging technologies such as deep-sea and aerospace innovation.
Among these, the concept of medical tourism particularly caught my attention. I had the opportunity to have a quick chat with Ms Yunyao Zhu, Manager of the International Medical Tourism Department at the company overseeing this sector, to learn more about its development and global potential.
